BONUS: Live 105's Top 25 Soundcheck Bands of 2001

Oh, the things you find on The Wayback Machine. Soundcheck is Live 105's weekly new music show, hosted by Music Director Aaron Axelsen, that's been airing since 1998. I don't know if they've done an artist retrospective every year, but they certainly did in 2001. It's interesting how most of these bands went on to something bigger (especially AFI, who the station was an early supporter of and would have their mainstream breakthrough less than two years later.)

Sorry about the wonky formatting. This is what happens when you copy directly from an old webpage.

1. AFI

BONUS: My Live 105 wishlist

Posting the playlists from my old journals reignited my interest in Live 105's history, so I started searching The Wayback Machine and came across some pretty neat stuff that I've since posted here. However, there are certain lists I remember from before I started doing these journals that either I can't find online (not even on RockLists.com) or I did see them on The Wayback Machine, but the links didn't work. However, if anybody happens to be searching this blog and has copies of or knows anything about the following lists, that would be great. I'll even do separate bonus entires on them when/if I get a hold of them.

-2003 Memorial Weekend Count Up: This was a typical "Greatest Live 105 songs" list, except rather than counting down from 105 to 1, they counted up from the top song--which was "Smells Like Teen Spirit," something they made fun of in promos ("Gee, I wonder who's going to be #1?" *Cue "Teen Spirit" riff*)-- to the bottom song on the list (which I think was "Smack My Bitch Up," but I'm not really sure).

-Top 105 American Rock Icons (2005): In 2004, Live 105 bucked the usual trend of stations playing nothing but American music on 4th of July Weekend by playing nothing but British music. Live 105 were a bunch of rascals, you see. A year later, they did a list of the greatest American icons in rock music. Much like the later Bands We're Thankful For list, it was a mixture of Live 105 artists and not-alternative-but-still-legendary acts like The Doors or Ray Charles.

-105 Greatest Songs of the Decade So Far: This was done in the fall of 2005. Since this was the halfway point for the decade, Live 105 counted down the biggest songs of the decade so far. I wasn't listening in 2009, but I can't find any evidence that they did a full list like this at decade's end. That would have been interesting to hear, given how much the music evolved over the course of the decade. Anyway, the only thing I remember about this list was that Nickelback's "How You Remind Me" clocked in somewhere, probably the last time the station ever played that band.

-The full Snacks and Tracks list: I already did writeup about this and you can see parts of it on this blog,  but I am curious about the full list. Most importantly, I want to see what snacks made the cut.

-Memorial Day 500 (2008): I actually do have parts of this list transcribed, and you'll see them when I get to 2008, but I can't find the full list anywhere. The only thing I did find was a similar list from 2009, which was after I stopped listening regularly. I've tried transcribing that one, but it doesn't translate well to a Pages document.

-Any other list that's not easily searchable online: Seriously, I do enjoy seeing this stuff.

Live 105 playlist July 1, 2006

In commemoration of the 4th of July, Live 105 did a Top 500 Snacks and Tracks Weekend. Half of it consisted of some of the biggest songs in Live 105 history, and the other half was just a listing of popular snack foods (Goldfish, french fries, etc.) It was a pretty pointless conceit for a specialized weekend, but this particular era was filled with those. They once did a weekend where at certain hours, they'd play Kansas' "Dust in the Wind"on a loop, and the 10th caller would be the one to stop it (but they didn't win anything. See what I mean about pointless weekends?).

I didn't actually write down the names of any of the snacks mentioned, and the full list isn't available anywhere else online (Not even on Archive.org), so enjoy these fragments.

1. Jimmy Eat World- Pain (#93)

2. Beck- Girl (#91)

3. Weezer- Hash Pipe (#90)

4. Fatboy Slim- Praise You (#88)

5. Green Day- Welcome to Paradise (#87)

BONUS: Live 105 playlist April 9, 2001

I found this in the Tuned In feature from an old Radio & Records magazine. I guess they tracked the station at certain hours of the day and posted what songs they played.
