Short Detour: Live 105 playlist June 23, 2015

So while you're looking at what the station was like in early 2006, why don't you take a look at the last 10 songs they played (as of this writing) today. Anything different about their playlists then and now?

1. Linkin Park- What I've Done

2. Imagine Dragons- Demons

3. Sublime- What I Got

4. Death Cab for Cutie- Black Sun

5. Coldplay- Viva La Vida

6. Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness- Cecilia and the Satellite

7. Green Day- Brain Stew/Jaded

8. The Neighbourhood- Sweater Weather

9. Phoenix- Lisztomania

10. Muse- Dead Inside

Me personally? I feel like the element of surprise is gone, as all of these are songs you could hear on any of the remaining alternative stations across the country. It's hard for the station to sound less mainstream these days when the sound they were pushing nearly a decade ago has become the dominant form of alternative and has even broken through to the top 40 in several instances.

On the other hand, they are still playing Death Cab for Cutie and Green Day a lot, so nothing's changed there.

Live 105 playlist March 23, 2006

1. Moby f/ Gwen Stefani- Southside

2. Death Cab for Cutie- Crooked Teeth

3. Nirvana- Breed

8. Jane's Addiction- Been Caught Stealing

2005 according to Comedy Central (Part 4)

1. Stella promo- It's the same as the one in the first part. This show won't last.

2. Mind of Mencia promo- Oh hey, a different promo. Ha, get it? Incest joke! And he's telling a religious joke in front of nuns! So edgy! Next!

3. Absolut- You can see it in the thumbnail. It's the same ad as before.

4. Toyota- Another repeat. Gas prices are still high.

5. L'oreal- Finally, something I haven't seen yet. This ad is voiced by either Dennis Miller or a Dennis Miller impersonator. And this isn't your average L'oreal. This is L'oreal for Men. They highlight this by updating the slogan to "Because you're worth it too." You know, in case men were feeling marginalized.

6. Tabasco- Haha, they want you think two people are having sex in a trailer, but they're just pouring hot sauce! Next!

7. Bud Light- Bud Light usually has funny ads to compensate for how lousy their beer is, but this is just too generic. It is filled with lies though: "Refreshing every single time." Sure, if you like beer that tastes like a nickel urinated. (Thank you, John Oliver.)

8. Taco Bell- I remember when Taco Bell would run these ads featuring a slow tempo, quasi-Mariachi   music track, which is about as close to Mexican culture as the restaurant has ever gotten. This was right around when they'd start narrowing their focus to college students with disposable incomes, and they began it by highlighting the fact that they're open until 1 A.M. It's also worth noting that their slogan around the time was "Think Outside the Bun" in an attempt to position themselves as being better than places like McDonalds and Burger King. In the past few years, they've dropped the pretense by offering things like the Doritos Locos Taco and the Waffle Taco. They're one of the boys.

2005 according to Comedy Central (Part 3)

1. Reno 911- This spot tells you everything you need to know about the show.

2. Castrol GTX- Same ad as before.

3. Applebee's- This is an ad for their Irresist-A-Bowls. Get it, like irresistible? They highlight this by doing a parody of Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible." The ads probably make them look better than they are. I've never been to Applebee's, so I can't say.

4. Snickers- This ad features a bunch of hunters throwing Snickers bars at a deer. Such a horrible waste of candy.

5. Ritz Chips- I just had these a few weeks ago. They're not too bad. This ad's pretty short. Apparently all you need are line drawings to bring attention to your product.

6. Kraft Ranch- Oh god, I thought I had this ad eradicated from my memory, but that "Pow! Right in the kisser" line instantly brought me back. By the way, I know that kisser is another term for mouth, but when I hear the phrase "right in the kisser," I think of Ralph Kramden threatening to beat his wife.  Was cartoonish domestic violence the association these jingle writers wanted to bring up? Because that's what I'm thinking here.

7. Stella- Another goddamn promo for this show. It's not even a very good one. They're just standing in front of a cloud backdrop while looking at the camera. Did they think that was enough to sell the show? I guess it worked since the show went on to last *looks it up* exactly two months. Nice of you to bet on a winner, Comedy Central.

2005 according to Comedy Central (Part 2)

1. Scheduler- I remember these. I don't know if Comedy Central still does these, but they would often find creative ways to promote that night's schedules. This one is a little less creative, merely listing that night's shows, which included Reno 911, Stella (Seriously, they were promoting the shit out of this show), and The Daily Show.

2. Mind of Mencia- Ugh. This was about a month after the third season of Chappelle's Show was aborted, so Comedy Central scrambled to find a suitable replacement, so they found Carlos Mencia  standing by the water cooler and offered him a show out of desperation. At least that's how I assume it happened because I have no idea why anybody would give him his own show. Like Dave Chappelle, Mencia dealt with a lot of racial stereotypes, but unlike Dave he forgot to make them witty or funny, instead coming off as an immature frat boy. The show hadn't premiered by this point, but it went on to last four seasons, despite not being funny. Comedy Central has since had many shows centered around a popular standup comedian, and for every Inside Amy Schumer, there's a Mind of Mencia.

3. Heineken- Oh, this ad reeks of 2005. Despite featuring a song by that hot new band The Alarm, it's also advertising two free downloads from Rhapsody. This was a subscription-based music service that was like a precursor to Spotify or Tidal. When I first discovered it, I thought it was the greatest thing: I could listen to a large library of music, create playlists, and even burn songs to CDs if I wanted. Of course, several years later, I learned I could do all that without having to pay, so Rhapsody became left in the dust. Somebody tell Jay-Z that.

4. Toyota- I guess the time-lapse from outside the car is neat, but the only notable thing about this ad is that they referenced the gas crisis, which despite some dropping prices still appears to have no end in sight. And this is 10 years later.

5. Absolut- This is an ad for fucking peach vodka. If that's your thing, well, it's still available. The ad uses a trick similar to The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" video and features an electropunk song that must have been written for this ad or never rose above obscurity because Shazam doesn't recognize it either way.

6. Subway- I guess people weren't sick of Jared yet in 2005 because here he is hawking their chicken sandwich and how it's better than other fast food restaurants' chicken sandwiches. There's not much to this one.

7. Comedy Central summer promo- And here we come full circle with another Comedy Central promo. This is an advertisement for their summer line-up that features a wasp flying around until it gets smashed, forming the CC logo. I remember seeing this one a lot that season, and it was pretty fun. A few things stand out when watching it today:

-I never knew what that song was back then, but I figured it was The Killers or The Bravery. Turns out, it was The Bravery doing one of their more lively songs.

-Weekends at the DL was an attempt to do something like The Daily Show on weekends, this time hosted by D.L. Hughley. It only lasted six months.

-Seeing that picture of The Daily Show cast at that time is bittersweet. Stephen Colbert, Rob Corddry, and Ed Helms have all moved on to bigger things, and Samantha Bee just left to launch her own show. Even Jon Stewart is leaving, but this photo reminds me of when their correspondent crop was at its prime.

-They also mention a new series starring Adam Carolla. This became Too Late with Adam Carolla, which aired in the spot after The Daily Show for a short period. It was then moved back half an hour to make room for The Colbert Report that fall. Carolla''s show only lasted a month afterwards.

2005 according to Comedy Central (Part 1)

(All videos courtesy of Dotbomber95. Thanks for uploading these.)

These are all from a commercial break that ran during The Daily Show:

1. Stella- This was an ad for a new series by Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and David Wain (of The State fame). At the time I only knew Black through his stints on VH-1's "I Love the..." series, and despite this show being advertised like mad at the time, I never watched it. From what I heard, it was an absurdist sketch comedy show, and that definitely comes across in this promo, where the three attempt to grow a mustache. It's cute, but nothing that made me want to tune in.

2. Indecision 2004 DVD- The Daily Show spent most of the early '00s building up its reputation beyond being a niche comedy show, but the 2004 election effectively completed it. This was the year they had guest interviews with former President Bill Clinton, then-Democratic candidate John Kerry, a 60 Minutes profile, a memorable showdown between Jon Stewart and the hosts of Crossfire, and the publishing of America (The Book).

2004 was the year I started watching The Daily Show on a regular basis, something I do to this day, and I was happy to see the highlights of their tumultuous campaign coverage on DVD. I rented it on Netflix that summer, and it was fun reliving such moments as their election night coverage, both conventions, the presidential debates, the aforementioned Kerry interview, and other assorted highlights, including commentary tracks where the correspondents just argued with each other. To the best of my knowledge, Comedy Central never did another best-of compilation for The Daily Show, but given they have their own site containing full episodes from as far back as 1999, I don't think they'll need to.

3. Castrol GTX- Oh god, I remember this one: the cars pulling the heavy weights and the wiper pulling back the sludge are both imprinted in my brain. However, I forgot how silly that hick cop laughing and saying "yeah" was.

4. Budweiser- Oh, the days when Budweiser didn't have to worry about craft beers biting into their market share and they could have a jingle proclaiming "This is beer." The ad is just a straightforward sales pitch of what goes into making a Budweiser beer, and they do a good job of making it look better than the watery swill it is.

5. Midol- Oh hey, menstruation pills following an ad for beer. Don't say Comedy Central has a narrow audience. It's funny how even with the use of words like "cramps" and "bloating,"15-year-old me still found this commercial hot. Yes, I was at that age.

6. Baby Ruth- They sure did a nice job of trying to make a candy bar look epic. It's nothing like the smashed candy bars I'm used to seeing.

7. NetZero HiSpeed 3G- I think they called it NetZero because zero people I know used it. "The third generation of Internet access." Yeah, sure...

8. Michigan.org- I don't remember this one. It must have been a local ad from the uploader's area, which I'm guessing was Michigan. By the way, why do states promote their tourism ads in the states being advertised? In California, we get a lot of those "Visit California" ads.

9. Mercedes-Benz- I guess this is a neat ad, showing stock footage of Mercedes-Benz's history while promoting their big summer event. Not much to say about this one.

A little detour

I was going to make another blog for this, but I figured it ties in closely enough with this blog's theme: invoking memories of relatively recent nostalgia (which is becoming less recent as time goes on).

You see, recently I came across a Comedy Central commercial break from 2005 on YouTube, and instantly some memories came flowing back. I watched a lot of Comedy Central during that time, probably even that specific commercial break. The most striking thing about it is seeing how the world was different only 10 years ago: what was big at the time, what we thought was going to be big, etc. Like commercials from any bygone era, it's fun to look back at these and laugh. Therefore, I'm going to comment on every commercial I see in these videos. I'll still make time to post old radio playlists, but I think this may be more fun. Let's hop into the Wayback Machine and go back to the summer of 2005.
